Summer Time 2015 Begins

[mybreadcrumb]

The switch to summer time 2015 begins near Dresden

Just as with every last Sunday in March, the small hand of the clock moves from 2 to 3 o’clock in the night from Saturday to Sunday. Our Summer time is not the “natural” or “biologically” correct time. The normal time of the central European timezone is the Winter time at 15° East. If you stay with us in Dresden, you are staying between 13° and 14° and therefore much closer to the meridian which determines central European time than Cape Touriñán in the Spanish Province of Galicia – which with about 1.5 hours of time difference, is the furthest location in the same time zone.

The History of Summer Time – a 200 year old idea

Summer time was implemented again in Germany in 1980 in the hope that it would save electricity. It was hoped that turning the clocks back would allow people to make the most of the daylight in the evenings. With the implementation of Summer Time, Germany followed in the footsteps of all their other European neighbors, who had already implemented this idea. Benjamin Franklin was the founder of this idea, who was already considering the idea of “Saving Daylight” in 1784. However, it was not until 1916, that Great Britain implemented “British Summer Time” and was the first nation to do so. Germany and Austria followed suit shortly afterwards. But this change was partially reversed only a few years later. Today the idea of saving electricity through the switch to summertime as rather outdated. Various studies claim that changing the time does not reduce the amount of electricity used. In fact, the opposite has been found to be true! In some cases even more electricity is being used because of increased heating costs.
